Carpets are a great way to add warmth and comfort to any space. But, as any property owner will know, they can get dirty pretty quickly. Whether it’s kids treading in mud or a guest spilling a glass of red, sometimes it’s beyond your control. But do you know how unclean your carpets really are?
As part of the Spring Cleaning Survey, the National Carpet Cleaners Association (NCCA) have made some startling discoveries when it comes to the dirty depths of carpets. Keep reading to see some eye-opening facts about the cleanliness of your flooring…
Harbouring germs
With 41% of Brits worried about germs and bacteria found in their carpets and sofas, it’s time to put your home under the microscope. The first finding – a whopping 70% of people admitted to bringing mud into their home after treading in it outside.
As well as outside dirt, carpets also trap nasty air pollutants – everything from dust, mites and mould. If left to linger, dust and bacteria can trigger allergies and lead to other health problems. That’s why deep and effective cleaning is required to create a clean and safe environment for everyone, including young children.
Blood, sweat and tears
And that’s not all. With over a quarter of people admitting they change baby nappies on their carpets, it’s no wonder people are worried about the cleanliness of their flooring.
Alongside this, 2 in 5 people revealed they exercise on their carpet – allowing sweat to get trapped in the fibres. And if that wasn’t enough, a startling 37% have had blood, urine and vomit on their carpet, floor or sofa.
Pesky pets
The germs don’t stop there either, especially if you have pets. As part of the NCCA survey, 25% of participants acknowledged they had tread dog poo onto their carpet.
Despite the obvious problems, if dog messes aren’t removed quickly they can leave behind a whole host of bad bacteria. When cleaning them, it’s also good to be aware of the best ways to prevent stains.
Food and drink
Despite not being the cleanest place in a house, over half of people admit to eating or drinking whilst sat on the carpet. Although a takeaway in front of the TV sounds like a great idea, people often find themselves accidently spilling their food causing stains and mess.
Not only that – 51% admitted to eating something they’d dropped on their floor. With the amount of dirt in carpets, it might be time to ditch the five second rule.
